Georges Pomerat was a much sought-after French Impressionist & Modern artist. Georges Pomerat’s work has been offered at auction multiple times.
Pomerat was a painter/ decorator before settling as a painter at the beginning of the 20th century. He exhibited his works in Marseille where he enjoyed success in the 1920s and 1930s. He then moved to Arles in the 1940s.
The artist lived in what the people of Marseilles called “the Old Quarters”, notably along the banks of the Canal Saint Jean which connected the Old port to the port of La Joliette, there is a good chance that the scene painted on this work takes place on this same channel.
